This year’s caregivers forum, sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, Western and Central Washington State Chapter, will feature a variety of speakers, exhibits and activities - all designed to emphasize the importance of caring for ourselves holistically: body, mind and spirit.
Pastor Gwendolyn Coates, founder of GAP Ministries, will begin the morning with a special invocation to inspire the spirit.
Shirley Bondon, Manager of the Office of Public Guardianship for the State of Washington, will provide the morning’s keynote address. Ms. Bondon’s topic is Who Decides? Helping Your Loved One with Alzheimer’s with Decision-Making.
- How can I plan with my family member before he or she loses the ability to make decisions?
- What can you do when someone you love has lost the ability to take care of themselves and resists all efforts of help?
- How do you help a parent with advanced dementia when you fear for his or her safety and see that a crisis is imminent?
She will also address proactive planning and substitute decision-making options, as well as the challenges and complexities of what to do when a family member or loved one with advanced dementia has not voluntarily prepared for disability by naming someone as their durable power of attorney.
A delicious luncheon is included. Additional speakers will be featured, and exhibit tables highlighting resources for caregivers will be available throughout the day, offering participants information about products, services and programs that support family caregivers.
The forum and luncheon are free, but space is limited, so please register early. To reserve your seat for Celebrating the Legacy of Love, register on-line at www.alz.org/alzwa under Events, or call 206-529-3894. Please RSVP by October 1, 2009
